As a freediver descends, water pressure compresses the air in the lungs. Normally the body adapts gracefully, but if depth, tension, or technique outpace that adaptation, delicate lung tissue can be injured. This is broadly called a lung squeeze, a form of pulmonary barotrauma, and it is one of the more serious depth-related risks to understand as you train deeper.
